I was seven when this photo was taken fifty years ago and I remember the occasion well. The excitment and strategies behind this hunt is full of adrenalin and surprise.
This is My Dad too, and he was brought up as a towny in the middle of Auckland and at the age of twenty headed for the country to work on farms and in the bush around the central north island and up in northland.
As a 'good kiwi bloke' he enjoyed hard manual work and supplemented it with frequent dose's of hair razing hunting adventures and enjoying his family. Later, fishing and duck shooting became passions as well and he included us all as much as he could.
Now I see him at times sitting in his chair and I think, what are his thoughts at this moment? He cannot do these things that he enjoyed so much now and how is he feeling about that and coming to terms with it I wonder?
I wish my life could reflect such adventurous living and I have had my moments in my life I know, but, it will never all equal the life of adventure of my good kiwi bloke Dad.
For this reason I treasure the times he took me on such adventures and will forever remember all the stories he has passed onto me in many ways.
He is my 'hero' and I hold him up there with all the other 'good kiwi blokes' who inspire our nation.
Thankyou Dad.
